Mel Gibson settled his long-running custody suit with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. According to the agreement reached Aug. 31 in L.A., the Braveheart star, 55, and Grigorieva, 41, will share custody of daughter Lucia, 1. • On Aug. 27, Lost actor Matthew Fox, 45 (inset), boarded a private bus in Cleveland, and when the driver, Heather Bormann, 29, told him he couldn’t ride on it, he allegedly punched her before she socked him in the mouth and cut his lip. She has filed assault charges, and Fox’s rep has not commented.• Joran van der Sloot, 24, the main suspect in the unsolved ’05 Aruba disappearance of then-18-year-old Natalee Holloway, was charged on Sept. 1 with killing Stephany Flores Ramirez, 21. Van der Sloot is claiming temporary insanity, saying he killed her in ’10 in a fit of rage in Lima, Peru, after she discovered his link to Holloway. “God bless the Peru authorities for handling this thoroughly and professionally,” says Holloway’s mother, Beth, 51.

As the son of Mississippi sharecroppers, David “Honeyboy” Edwards lived the blues. Renowned for his finger-picking technique, the Grammy-winning musician played on street corners with the legendary Robert Johnson and performed with the likes of Muddy Waters. Edwards spent the majority of his life playing the blues, making him, before his death on Aug. 29 at age 96, probably the oldest survivor of the generation that originated the Delta blues.
MANSION DEATHS NOT MURDER
San Diego police announced Sept. 2 that Rebecca Zahau, 32, who was found hanged on July 13 in the Coronado, Calif., mansion of her boyfriend, pharmaceutical tycoon Jonah Shacknai, 54 (bottom left), committed suicide. Officials revealed she left a cryptic note on the bedroom door: “She Saved Him Can You Save Her.” Two days earlier, Shacknai’s son Max, 6 (right), had fallen down a staircase while Zahau was in the house. He died on July 16. “These deaths were not the result of any criminal act,” said the San Diego County Sheriff.
