LEGAL MATTERS

On Jan. 10 in Austin, Texas, former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, 63, was sentenced to three years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering. The fallen political powerhouse, who was known as the Hammer for his hardball approach to pushing through legislation, was convicted in November of helping to divert corporate funds to get Republican candidates elected to the Texas legislature in 2002. DeLay was released on $10,000 bond as his lawyers vowed to appeal the sentence. “I can’t be remorseful for something I don’t think I did,” said the onetime exterminator and Dancing with the Stars contestant. DeLay had been facing a life sentence behind bars.
