Maria Lauterbach, 20, who had accused him of rape, a charge officials could not prove (PEOPLE Jan. 28, 2008). Sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, Laurean plans to appeal.

Longtime CBS News correspondent Harold Dow, 62, who worked on 48 Hours for over 20 years, died suddenly on Aug. 21 in New Jersey. The majestic Chestnut tree Anne Frank refers to in her diary was toppled in a storm on Aug. 23. Looking from the attic window of what is now the Anne Frank House Museum in Amsterdam, the teenager wrote in 1944, “I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree…While this lasts I cannot be unhappy.” The 150-year-old tree, ravaged by disease and rot, was considered a living symbol of the Jewish girl, who hid with her family during the Nazi invasion. Despite the tree’s condition, the Support Anne Frank Tree group successfully lobbied in 2007 to save it from being chopped. For now, there are no plans to replant or save the existing branches, many of which are appearing on auction websites in the Netherlands.

On Aug. 19 in Los Angeles, Madonna, 52, was sued over the Material Girl junior fashion line she designs with her daughter Lourdes, 13. Clothing company L.A. Triumph claims it has been selling similar apparel under the same name since 1997 and says Madonna‘s use of the Material Girl moniker “is likely to confuse the public and cause deception.” The firm wants the singer to stop using the disputed name immediately and hand over any profits from the 1980s-inspired line, which went on sale at Macy’s a few weeks ago. Madonna could not be reached for comment.
