LEGAL MATTERS

An animal behavior expert has deemed Jennifer Lopez, 40, and husband Marc Anthony, 41, responsible for their guard dog’s alleged attack on flight attendant Lisa Wilson in 2006. Dr. Karen Overall, hired by Wilson’s attorneys after she sued the couple last year, recently concluded that they should have sent Floyd, a military-trained German shepherd, to counseling after he had reacted angrily to their chef. A lawyer for the dog’s famous owners said that he has hired his own specialist to evaluate the dog. • Michelle Ross, 26, the surrogate who bore actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s 5-month-old twin daughters, testified Nov. 19 in a case involving an alleged burglary at her house in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Suspended police chief Barry Carpenter, who has pleaded not guilty, is accused of breaking into her home last May in an attempt to find material that he could sell to paparazzi.

TRAGEDY

Singer-actress Miley Cyrus‘s tour-bus driver William Douglas, 53, affectionately known as Uncle Bill, was killed Nov. 20 when the vehicle overturned on a highway in Dinwiddie County, Va. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in the midst of this tragedy,” said the family of the Hannah Montana star, 17, who was not aboard the bus.

RECOVERING

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (inset), 19, underwent an emergency appendectomy Nov. 18, causing her to cancel a trip to perform on the Australian version of the show. The next day she tweeted, “I think I’m the only one not seeing New Moon right now,” but said after her Nov. 20 release that she was “in a great mood.”

DEATHS

Stefanie Spielman, 42, the wife of former NFL linebacker Chris Spielman, 44, died at her home in Upper Arlington, Ohio, Nov. 19 after a 12-year battle with breast cancer. Her husband, with whom she had four children, took time off from playing football to care for her. • Evan Chandler, 65, the father of the first young boy to publicly accuse Michael Jackson of molesting him, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his home in Jersey City, N.J., Nov. 5. The onetime Beverly Hills dentist’s son Jordan received an estimated $20 million settlement to stop speaking about his claim that he was abused at age 12 during sleepovers with the late entertainer in 1992. Evan was reportedly extremely ill with cancer.

FATHER OF THE BRIDE?

Jane Carrey, 22, daughter of funnyman Jim Carrey, 47, tied the knot with rock musician Alex Santana in L.A. Nov. 14. “It was a beautiful day,” the comic tells PEOPLE. “Simple and sweet. I wish them everything that love has given us.” And the new father-in-law is set to take on another title: grandfather. Jane, a singer whose mother is Jim’s ex-wife Melissa, and her husband are awaiting their first child, due in March. “Jane is going to be a great mom,” her dad said in July.
