High School Musical star Zac Efron, 20, is on the mend after being rushed to an L.A. hospital for an emergency appendectomy Jan. 15. “Zac had his appendix removed and is recuperating,” his rep says.


Aussie actress Toni Collette, 35, and her husband of five years, musician Dave Galafassi, 30, welcomed their first child, daughter Sage Florence, in Sydney Jan. 9. “All are well and very happy,” says a rep for the Little Miss Sunshine star…. Former Olympic track gold medalist Marion Jones, 32, was sentenced Jan. 11 to six months in prison for lying to federal investigators about using performance-enhancing drugs and for her role in a check-fraud scam. She must surrender March 11 to begin her term…. Kendrick Williams, 32, was arrested in Brooklyn Jan. 15 and charged with the murder of 22-year-old New York City resident Stepha Henry, a recent John Jay College graduate who vanished while vacationing in Florida in May. A police investigator said enough of her blood was found in Williams’ car, where authorities found him sleeping, to conclude that Henry had been killed. Police said Williams and Henry were introduced by mutual friends at a barbecue during her visit on May 29 and later that day went to a nightclub in Sunrise, Fla., where Henry was last seen. It was unclear where Williams was living at the time.


Sir Edmund Hillary, 88, the famous mountaineer and explorer who in 1953, along with his late guide Tenzing Norgay, was the first to scale Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak, died in Auckland, New Zealand, Jan. 11…. Hollywood’s honorary mayor, TV producer and radio personality Johnny Grant, 84, was found dead Jan. 9 at L.A.’s Roosevelt Hotel, where he lived, apparently of natural causes, authorities said.


The L.A. coroner’s office has revealed that rapper Kanye West‘s mother, Donda, 58, died from heart disease and “multiple postoperative factors” on Nov. 10, 2007, following liposuction and breast-reduction procedures. A medical examiner said Jan. 10 that although the exact cause is undetermined, “It is my opinion that Ms. West died from some preexisting coronary artery disease.” The findings effectively clear Donda’s plastic surgeon Dr. Jan Adams, 53, of any guilt in the matter. Adams said, “The coroner’s report confirms what we have always believed.”
