LEGAL MATTERS

Charlize Theron, 31, is being sued by Swiss jewelry designer Raymond Weil for breach of contract. Weil alleges that by appearing at a March film festival sporting a Christian Dior watch (she is also the face of Dior perfume), the actress violated an agreement to wear only Weil’s watches. A rep for Theron did not respond to a request for comment…. On Feb. 2 country star Keith Urban, 39 (center), sued New Jersey painter Keith Urban, 37, who he claims is selling merchandise on his online art gallery keithurban.com as if produced or endorsed by the singer. The suit charges the painter with violating trademark infringement and seeks transfer of the Web address at issue to the Grammy winner…. On Jan. 29 a U.S. district court in Illinois ordered Sharon Vaughn, 64, mother of actor Vince Vaughn, 36, to pay a $200,000 civil penalty. Last March the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint against Sharon, owner of the hedge fund management company Directors Financial Group, accusing her of defrauding clients by investing in an illegitimate trade deal…. Police have recommended that Prison Break actor Lane Garrison be charged with felony gross vehicular manslaughter in connection with a Dec. 2 car crash in Beverly Hills. Authorities said the actor, 26, had cocaine in his system and a blood alcohol level of .20 (more than twice California’s legal limit) when he struck a tree with his Land Rover, killing a 17-year-old male passenger and injuring two 15-year-old girls. If charged and convicted, Garrison could face up to 13 years in prison.

Former Vice President Al Gore, 58, is a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing attention to global warming. Gore’s environmental film An Inconvenient Truth is also up for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar.

UPDATE

Evangelical minister Ted Haggard, 50, founder and former pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., has announced that he is “completely heterosexual” after three weeks of intensive counseling at an undisclosed location. The married father of five resigned from the church in November following his admission of “sexual immorality” after a male escort revealed their affair.

DEATHS

Bestselling political author and columnist Molly Ivins, 62, known for her strident criticism of President George W. Bush, died Jan. 31 in Austin, Texas, after a seven-year battle with breast cancer…. Richard Kelley, 91, stepfather of former President Bill Clinton, died Jan. 31 at his home in Hot Springs, Ark., after suffering from colon and liver cancer.

SOBER MOMENT

On Feb. 5, just four days after he publicly apologized for an affair with his former campaign manager’s wife, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, 39, said in a statement that he plans to seek alcohol counseling: “I have come to the conclusion that I will be a better person without alcohol in my life.” Newsom added that he has already stopped drinking but wants professional help to remain sober.
