Singer Melissa Etheridge, 45, and her partner, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels, 31 (The L Word), welcomed twins, son Miller Steven and daughter Johnnie Rose, Oct. 17 in L.A. “The joy will help carry us through our upcoming sleepless nights,” said the couple, who announced Michaels’s pregnancy via an anonymous sperm donor in April…. Days after the shootings at an Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pa., a female survivor identified only as Lydia, 22, gave birth Oct. 10 to a baby girl. Lydia, who was one of the four women released by gunman Charlie Roberts, named her new daughter Naomi Rose after one of the five young victims shot and killed. According to Catherine Saunders, a nurse who attended the delivery, the new mom said: “This baby saved my life.”

EXPECTING

Project Runway judge and Elle fashion director Nina Garcia, 41, and husband, financier David Conrod, 46, are expecting their first child together in March. “Heidi is very excited for me,” says Garcia about her pregnant fellow judge. “We will have lots to talk about next year.”

After a tumultuous 14-year marriage, Whitney Houston officially filed for divorce from Bobby Brown Oct. 16 in Southern California’s Orange County. Houston, 43, is seeking custody of the couple’s 13-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina and asks that Brown, 39, be allowed visitation rights.

UPDATE

The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment, 18, was sentenced to 60 hours of alcohol rehab, a minimum of 26 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and placed on three years’ probation on Oct. 19 in L.A. after pleading no contest to driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of marijuana possession. In July Osment was arrested after crashing his car and testing for a blood-alcohol content double the legal limit…. Former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling, 52, was sentenced Oct. 23 in Houston to more than 24 years in prison, concluding the last chapter in the collapse of the corporate giant. Enron’s admission in 2001 to overstating profits eventually led to employees losing millions of dollars in their pension and 401(k) plans.

DEATHS

Jane Wyatt, the actress best known for playing the ideal mom in the hit 1950s series Father Knows Best, died Oct. 20 at her Bel-Air, Calif., home at 96. Though Wyatt appeared in more than 30 films, it was her TV role as Robert Young’s wife, Margaret Anderson, that cemented her fame and earned her three Emmys.

THIN ICE

Lloyd Eisler, winner of Skating with Celebrities, was suspended from coaching for a year by Skate Canada. While the organization has not released details, The Toronto Star reported Eisler, 43, sent inappropriate e-mails to a 15-year-old student he was coaching. A rep for Eisler would not comment, but in a public statement Eisler said, “I believe that I have taken responsibility and addressed any misunderstanding.” Eisler, who lives in L.A. with Skating partner Kristy Swanson, 36, is awaiting the birth of their first child.
