Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, 38, and her husband, anesthesiologist Neil Murray, are expecting their second child next year. The couple, who wed in 2001, have a son, David, 17 months, and Rowling has a 9-year-old daughter, Jessica, from a previous marriage. “I could not be happier,” wrote Rowling on her Web site, adding that her pregnancy won’t delay the sixth book in the series. “I don’t foresee any baby-related interruptions or delays.” …

Actress Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), 37, and her boyfriend, musician Ben Harper, 34, are expecting their second child this winter. The couple’s son Ellery turns 3 this month.


It’s a boy for Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines, 29, and her husband, actor Adrian Pasdar (Judging Amy), 39. Beckett Finn, who was born July 14, joins brother Jackson, 3….

Grammy-winning singer Erykah Badu, 33, welcomed daughter Puma at her Dallas home July 5. Badu declines to identify the father. She also has a 6-year-old son, Seven, with ex-boyfriend Andre “3000” Benjamin of the hip-hop duo OutKast.


On July 20 in L.A., rocker Peter Frampton, 54, sued Australian company Billabong for making a bikini that bears his name, his likeness, and the words “Baby, I Love Your Waves.” The singer claims the tagline is an obvious reference to his hit 1976 song “Baby, I Love Your Way.” A rep for Billabong could not be reached for comment.


John Gotti Jr., 40, the son of the late boss of the Gambino crime family, was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping July 22 in the 1992 shooting of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. Gotti is currently in prison on racketeering charges but is scheduled to be released in September. Sliwa, 50, who frequently spoke out against the Gambino crime family as host of a radio talk show, survived after being shot outside his Manhattan home.


Singer Courtney Love, 40, was sentenced July 27 in L.A. to 18 months probation, including approximately six months of rehab, as the result of an October incident outside her ex-boyfriend’s house (PEOPLE, Oct. 20, 2003). Four days earlier, she surrendered to the LAPD on a separate charge of assault with a deadly weapon.


Composer Jerry Goldsmith, 75, who received more than a dozen Oscar nominations and won for 1976’s The Omen, died of cancer July 21 in Beverly Hills. The multiple Emmy winner wrote scores for many TV shows, including Star Trek and The Waltons, and nearly 200 films including Planet of the Apes and Chinatown.
