Actor Sylvester Stallone, 55, and his wife, Jennifer Flavin Stallone, 33, welcomed their third daughter, Scarlet Rose, on May 25 in L.A. She joins Sophia, 5, and Sistine, 3.


7th Heaven‘s Barry Watson, 28, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, a form of lymphatic cancer. A spokeswoman for the actor, who began treatment recently, said, “Doctors are extremely optimistic about a full recovery.”

On the Mend

Veteran funnyman Jerry Lewis, 76, returned to his Las Vegas home May 23 after a brief hospital stay to check on a surgically implanted device designed to block chronic back pain caused by years of pratfalls. The battery-powered pulse generator was inserted in his spine at a Houston hospital on April 8….

After what her daughter Luci Baines Johnson called “a remarkable recovery,” Lady Bird Johnson, 89, went home May 23 after a three-week hospital stay in Austin, Texas, following a stroke.


On May 22, Friends star David Schwimmer, 35, received two stitches near his hairline after being struck by a flying glass, the result of a dispute between two women at Manhattan’s Thompson Hotel that did not involve the actor.

In Court

Sidney Waite, 39, of Richmond, B.C., accused of stalking Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, 44, for more than two years, avoided jail time by pleading guilty to aggravated harassment and agreeing to return to Canada immediately. In a plea bargain worked out May 21 in Manhattan criminal court, he also promised to stay away from the former First Daughter for at least three years.

Yancy Butler, 31, the star of TNT’s Witchblade, recently checked herself into an undisclosed rehab facility for alcohol treatment.


Smooth-swinging golf legend Sam Snead, 89, died at his home in Hot Springs, Va., on May 23 after a series of strokes. A self-taught golfer, Snead won a record 81 PGA tournaments and three Masters titles (1949, ’52 and ’54). He was the first golfer to receive the tournament’s traditional green jacket.


Ending a 38-year chapter in U.S. civil rights history, Bobby Frank Cherry, 71, was found guilty of murder on May 22 for helping set the bomb that killed four black girls at a church m Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 15, 1963 (PEOPLE, June 5, 2000). Cherry, who was the last of three suspects to be tried in the case, was sentenced to four consecutive life terms.


Danny Moder, 33, the cameraman beau of actress Julia Roberts, 34, was officially divorced from his wife of almost five years, Vera Steimberg, 29, on May 16 in L.A. In the dissolution, Steimberg, a makeup artist, will keep the two family dogs and a house in Woodland Hills, Calif., while Moder gets their 1997 Toyota 4 Runner along with his video and camera equipment.
