Disco diva Vicki Sue Robinson, whose “Turn the Beat Around” has been a dance-floor standard since 1976, died on April 27 of cancer in Wilton, Conn. She was 45….

Raphael de Rothschild, a scion of the French billionaire banking family, died on April 22 of an apparent heroin overdose on a Manhattan sidewalk. He was 23….

George Story, 63, whose birth was recorded in a photograph for the first issue of LIFE magazine in 1936 (and who was supposed to pose for its last issue, out this month), died of heart failure in Hawaii on April 4, two weeks after the picture magazine announced it was going out of business as a monthly.


Gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton, 32, who now makes a living as a motivational speaker, and her husband of nine years, Shannon Kelley, 34, a financial analyst, are expecting their third child in August. The couple, who live in Houston, have two girls: Shayla, 5, and McKenna, 3….

The English Patient’s Kristin Scott Thomas, 39, and husband François Olivennes, 41, a doctor, are expecting their third child as well, also in August. Their daughter Hannah turns 12 on May 10, and son Joseph is 9.

Actor and martial-arts master Jet Li, 37, and his wife, Nina, 38, welcomed daughter Jane (6 lbs. 13 oz.) on April 19 in L.A.


Walter Matthau, 79, suffered a hairline fracture in a vertebra after falling several weeks ago. The actor, hospitalized at press time, will undergo physical therapy as an outpatient upon his release, which is expected soon.

Stepping Down

New dad James P. Rubin, 40, who served as Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s spokesman for the past seven years, left his post in late April. He is moving to London to help his wife, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, 42, raise their son Darius, born March 27.


Miramax Films co-chairman Robert Weinstein, 45, and Annie Clayton, 31, a former assistant editor at HarperCollins, tied the knot on April 29 in New York City.

Legal Matters

On April 28 in San Diego, authorities indicted Jill Scott Chance, 40, who was crowned Mrs. America for 1991, on charges of failing to declare about $100,000 in jewelry and pretending to be single when she filed for bankruptcy in 1996.
