TV announcer Jack Haskell, 79, a fixture on the late-night shows of Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, died of undisclosed causes on Sept. 26 in Englewood, N.J….

Shoe-biz great Fiamma Ferragamo, 57, designer of leather goods bearing her family name, died of breast cancer on Sept. 28 in Florence. The 1960s creation she named the Vara—a round-toe, low-heeled pump with grosgrain ribbon and a gold buckle—continues to be a favorite of well-heeled businesswomen….

Margaret Mary Ray, 46, the woman who spent time in prison and a mental institution for stalking TV host David Letterman, committed suicide by kneeling in front of an oncoming train on Oct. 5 near Hotchkiss, Colo. “This is a sad end to a confused life,” said Letterman.


Calling the comedian’s conduct abusive, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge fined Garry Shandling, 48, late of The Larry Sanders Show, $2,903 on Sept. 29 for refusing to answer questions in a deposition. It was a preliminary step in a $100 million lawsuit Shandling filed against his former friend and manager Brad Grey, charging that he profitted at Shandling’s expense. Grey, in turn, has filed a countersuit for $10 million.


On Oct. 2 in London, actors Liam Neeson, 46, and Natasha Richardson, 35, won $85,000 in a libel suit they filed against a British tabloid. In September The Mirror published a story claiming that Richardson, married to Neeson since 1994, planned to file for divorce behind his back. The couple, who have two sons (Micheál, 3, and Daniel, 2), plan to donate the money to victims of the Aug. 15 car bombing in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Neeson’s homeland.


Gold-medal gymnast Shannon Miller, 21, now a business major at the University of Oklahoma, and Chris Phillips, 25, a fourth-year medical student there, announced on Oct. 1 that they plan to marry next year….

Actor Jay Mohr, 27, who played the backstabbing agent in Jerry Maguire, and his girlfriend, Nicole Chamberlain, 28, an actress who appeared with him in Paulie, plan to tie the knot in November.


The Artist, formerly known as Prince, 40, tripped over equipment and injured his foot on Sept. 26 during a concert in Atlantic City. The four remaining dates of his national tour have been rescheduled.

Real Life Drama

Country singer Randy Travis, 39, leaned over the seat and stopped the limousine in which he was a passenger on Sept. 27 after the driver suffered an apparent heart attack. Travis and his wife, Lib, were leaving L.A. International Airport for their home in the area when they noticed that the vehicle was drifting into the next lane. After turning off the ignition, Travis hailed a doctor from a passing shuttle bus, but the limo driver could not be revived.


Actor-director Albert Brooks, 51, and his wife, Kimberly, 32, a business-woman, welcomed their first child, Jacob Eli (7 lbs. 9 ozs.), on Oct. 1 in L.A.
