Author and ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson, 87, whose landmark 1934 book A Field Guide to the Birds sold 7 million copies and helped turn countless Americans into bird-watchers, died of undisclosed causes on July 28 at his home in Old Lyme, Conn. Peterson was also a master artist who drew and painted thousands of illustrations for his 46 bird and nature guides….

Actress Luana Anders, 57, who began her Hollywood career in the 1950s as an MGM bike messenger, died of breast cancer on July 21 in Mar Vista, Calif. In all, she appeared in some 30 films, including 1961’s Pit and the Pendulum and 1969’s Easy Rider….

Singer Marguerite Ganser Dorste, 48, an original member of the ’60s girl group the ShangriLas (“Leader of the Pack”), died of breast cancer on July 28 at Calvary Hospital in New York City….

Actress Jean Muir, 85, fired from TV’s The Aldrich Family in 1950 after being labeled a Communist—a charge she denied—by the blacklisting publication Red Channels, died of undisclosed causes on July 23 in Mesa, Ariz. Muir, who had previously appeared on Broadway and in films, later taught drama at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo….

Actress Virginia Christine, 76, known to millions of TV viewers as Mrs. Olson in the Folgers coffee commercials that ran from 1964 to 1984, died of heart complications on July 24 in Los Angeles. The Iowa-born Christine, the smiling matron who served “mountain-grown” coffee to young married couples, also appeared in such film classics as 1952’s High Noon, 1956’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers and 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.

Actor Joe Lando, 34, who plays Jane Seymour’s hunky mountain man on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, will marry his longtime love, Kirsten Barlow, 26, next March. It will be the first marriage for both.

Actress Josie Bissett, 26, who plays designing woman Jane Mancini on Melrose Place, and her actor husband, Rob Estes, 33, who will join the Melrose cast in the fall, are expecting their first child in March. Bissett will vacate her Melrose digs in October to prepare for motherhood….

ER star Anthony Edwards, 34, and his wife, makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, 32, are expecting their second child in January. Their son Bailey is 2.

A Chicago judge ruled July 24 that former A-Team muscleman Mr. T, 44, must pay $4.9 million to two men who say they transformed Lawrence Tero, the former nightclub bouncer, into the mo-hawked, monosyllabic Mr. T. Calvin Hollins and John Bitoy claim that Mr. T, who was diagnosed with lymphoma last November and is reportedly doing well after radiation treatment, agreed in the early ’80s, when they were his coworkers, to pay them 20 percent of his lifetime earnings related to the Mr. T persona. Mr T’s response to the decision: “It’s just one round.”

Comedian Martin Lawrence, 31, who was picked up by police in May after they found him screaming at passersby in an L.A. intersection while carrying a gun in his pants pocket, was detained by Burbank (Calif.) Airport police on July 29 after they found a loaded handgun in his suitcase. The star of Fox’s Martin faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a loaded firearm in public and has a tentative court date of Aug. 12….

Rapper Warren G (Warren Griffin III), 25, was arrested in West Hollywood on July 24 after police found a handgun and ammunition in his truck. Officers said they had first approached the vehicle because it fit the description of one involved in a July 17 shooting. He was charged with possession of a concealed weapon and released on $10,000 bail. Warren G dismisses the police’s reason for the search as “a bunch of baloney. They decided they wanted to mess with me that night, so the police jacked me up.”

Greece’s Crown Prince Pavlos, 29, and the Crown Princess Pavlos, 27, who was known as Marie-Chantal Miller before her marriage, welcomed their first child, 8-lb., 11-oz. Princess Maria-Olympia, on July 25 in New York City. The prince is the eldest son of Constantine, the deposed former monarch of Greece. The couple live in Greenwich, Conn….

Country singer Garth Brooks, 34, and his wife, Sandy, 31, are the parents of a third daughter, 8-lb., 10-oz. Allie Colleen, who was born July 28 in Nashville. She joins Taylor Mayne Pearl, 4, and August Anna, 2….

Princess Margaret’s daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto 32, and her artist husband, Daniel, 39, made Margaret a first-time grandmother on July 27 in London. The 7-lb., 12-oz. boy, who had not been given a name at press time, is 14th in line to the British throne.

Actress-singer Bernadette Peters, 48, who starred in Broadway’s Into the Woods, married financial adviser Michael Wittenberg, 34, on July 20 at the home of Peters’s good pal Mary Tyler Moore, in Millbrook, N.Y. It is the first marriage for both.

A year after having his left foot removed due to complications from diabetes, Oliver “Mooney” Lynn, 69, husband of country queen Loretta Lynn—he was played by Tommy Lee Jones in the 1980 movie Coal Miner’s Daughter—had the lower part of his right leg amputated for the same reason on July 14 at a Nashville hospital. He is recuperating at home in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Tommy Lasorda, 68, announced on July 29 that he is retiring as the team’s manager and will now serve as a vice president. Lasorda, who underwent an angioplasty on June 26 following a mild heart attack, began his career with the Dodgers as a pitcher 47 years ago. He became the team’s manager in 1976 and led the Dodgers to World Series titles in 1981 and ’88.
