A Los Angeles judge sentenced actor Robert Downey Jr. to three years’ probation on drug and weapons charges Nov. 6, and ordered Downey to remain in a drug rehab program for three more months, according to wire services. Downey, 31, was first arrested in June after authorities stopped his pickup truck for speeding and found crack cocaine, heroin and a 357 Magnum handgun inside….
Writers Steven and William Patrick filed a $5 million breach of contract suit against actor Eddie Murphy and Universal Studios on Oct. 30 in Los Angeles. The brothers claim they had submitted a screenplay to Universal in ’91 that was similar to Murphy’s summer hit The Nutty Professor….
Singer Paul Anka, 55, filed a malpractice suit against his dentist Frederick Glassman on Oct. 28 in L.A. Anka alleges that during a recent concert in Las Vegas, a crown that Glass-man had installed on one of the singer’s teeth popped off and flew into the audience, forcing Anka to cancel the show.
Mario Savio, who championed free speech on campuses during the tumultuous ’60s, died on Nov. 6 at age 53 in Sebastopol, Calif., after being hospitalized for heart problems. Savio was a student at UC-Berkeley in 1964, when he protested the university’s ban on political activity. His actions became a model for college students across the country….

The Internal Revenue Service wants singer Stevie Nicks, 48, to pay $85,887 in additional 1991 taxes. The IRS claims that she took $270,000 in improper business deductions for makeup, hairstyling, clothes and home office expenses. Nicks’s attorney says they were necessary performing expenditures.
