Actress-dancer Juliet Prowse, 59, died of pancreatic cancer on Sept. 14 at her L.A. home. Born in India and reared in South Africa, Prowse studied ballet as a child, but her adult height of 5’8″ prevented a career in classical dance. She made her Hollywood entrance in the 1960 musical Can-Can, costarring Frank Sinatra, to whom she was briefly engaged in 1962….

Movie actress Joanne Dru, 74, died of respiratory failure Sept. 10 at her home in Beverly Hills. A Logan, W.Va., native, Dru moved to New York City in 1940 to model and to get into show-business. The older sister of TV game-show host Peter Marshall, she made her film debut in 1946’s Abie’s Irish Rose. Dru is best remembered as the heroine of such western epics as Howard Hawks’s Red River (1948) and John Ford’s She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)….

Austrian-born television and screen actress Bibi Besch, 54, died of cancer in L.A. on Sept. 7. Her recurring role as Jane O’Connell on CBS’s Northern Exposure earned her an Emmy nomination in 1993. Daughter of the late actress Gusti Huber, Besch was the mother of Broken Arrow actress Samantha Mathis….

McGeorge Bundy, 77, national security adviser to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, died of a heart attack Sept. 16 at a Boston hospital. Bundy, a Harvard dean at 34, helped Kennedy shape his response to both the Bay of Pigs invasion in ’61 and the Cuban missile crisis in ’62. Though he eventually expressed a desire to see the U.S. halt its bombing of Vietnam, his early advocacy of heavy reprisals against the Communists had been instrumental in widening the conflict. Bundy left politics in 1966 and was a scholar-in-residence at the Carnegie Corporation at the time of his death.

Comedian Martin Lawrence, 31, filed for divorce on Sept. 17 in L.A. superior court from his wife, former beauty queen Patricia Southall, 25. The couple, married 18 months, have an 8-month-old daughter, Jasmine….

Citing irreconcilable differences, singer Vic Damone, 68, filed for divorce from his wife of nine years, singer-actress Diahann Carroll, 61, in L.A. superior court on Sept. 11.

Singers Bonnie Raitt, 46, and Eagle Don Henley, 49, as well as Raitt’s father, Broadway belter John Raitt, 79, were among some 1,000 protesters at an anti-logging demonstration Sept. 15 in Carlotta, Calif. Bonnie Raitt, who was arrested and charged with trespassing, was released at the scene. The demonstrators were objecting to the logging of giant redwoods in Headwaters Forest, the world’s last privately owned virgin grove of the ancient trees….

Liz Taylor’s soon-to-be ex, Larry Fortensky, 44, was arrested in Redondo Beach, Calif., on Sept. 15 and charged with possession of a concealed weapon. Police stopped the former construction worker for driving a motorcycle without a helmet, then allegedly found a semiautomatic 9 mm. pistol in his saddlebag. Fortensky was released the same day. He is due in court on Oct. 7.
