Anna Nicole Smith, 26, the Guess? jeans model and 1992 Playboy Playmate of the Year, is recovering at her Los Angeles home after she and a friend, Daniel Ross, 20, were hospitalized for what police describe as an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. A Smith spokesperson maintains the model was taken lo L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Feb. 12 suffering from a severe migraine, but authorities say the two had been guests at a Beverly Hills hotel where they consumed alcohol, the painkiller Vicodin and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. No charges were filed, and both are expected lo recover fully.
One of the world’s best-known paintings, The Scream, by Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch (1863-1944), was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo on Feb. 12. A security video camera taped two men entering the museum through a window. Fifty seconds later they fled with the multimillion-dollar painting. They left a note: “Thanks for the poor security.”
Donna Harris Lewis, 29, widow of Boston Celtics captain Reggie Lewis, 27, gave birth to Reggiena Sarah (7 lbs., 3 ozs.) on Feb. 7 in Cambridge, Mass. Ironically, Lewis and her husband learned of her pregnane) on July 27, the same day he died of cardiac arrest while shooting baskets in a college gym. The Lewises’ son, Reggie Jr., is 18 months.
Actor Sorrell Booke, 64. best remembered as blustery Mayor Jefferson Davis “Boss” Hogg on the CBS action-comedy The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985), died of cancer on Feb. 11 at his Sherman Oaks, Calif., home. A graduate of Columbia University and the Yale School of Drama, Booke also appeared in several Broadway productions and in films such as Up the Down Staircase (1967) and What’s Up, Doc? (1972)….
Former University of Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson, 77, who guided the Sooners to three national championships and engineered a record 47 straight wins during one five-season stretch (1953-1957), died of congestive heart failure at his St. Louis home. Wilkinson, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for a U.S. Senate seat from Oklahoma in 1964….
Author Christopher Lasch, 61, who saw modern Americans as alienated and self-absorbed and expounded the values of community and self-discipline in his 1978 best-seller, The Culture of Narcissism, died of cancer on Feb. 14 at his Pitts-ford, N.Y., home. His writings provided the basis for President Jimmy Carter’s 1979 speech addressing the “national malaise.”
Mötley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, 31, was charged on Feb. 8 with possession of a concealed and loaded firearm after trying to walk through an L.A. airport metal detector with a semiautomatic pistol. Lee is scheduled to be arraigned in court Feb. 22….
On Feb. 15 drifter Danny Harold Rolling, 39, pleaded guilty to five charges of first-degree murder, three charges of sexual battery and three charges of armed burglary as he was going on trial for the slayings of five Florida college students in 1990 (PEOPLE, Sept. 17, 1990). Rolling is already serving multiple life terms for several robberies and burglaries. The state is seeking the death penalty.
