Italian actress Giulietta Masina, 73, the wife of director Federico Fellini, died of lung cancer on March 23 in a Rome hospital. Best known for her role as Gelsomina in Fellini’s La Strada (1954), Masina died almost five months after her husband died of a heart attack at 73….

Romanian-born French playwright Eugène Ionesco, 84, who used farce to explore themes of alienation and conformity, died of an undisclosed illness at his home in Paris on March 28. Between 1950 and 1980, lonesco wrote 28 surrealistic plays, most notably The Raid Soprano (1950), The Chairs (1952) and Rhinoceros (1959)….

Albert Goldman, 66, a former LIFE music columnist who later wrote biting, unauthorized biographies of Lenny Bruce, Elvis Presley and John Lennon, died of a heart attack on March 30 while en route from Miami to London. At the lime of his death, Goldman was at work on a biography of the Doors’ Jim Morrison.

Robert E. Kennedy Jr., 40, an environmental lawyer, and his wife of 12 years, Emily Black, 37, also an attorney, were granted a divorce on March 24 in the Dominican Republic. The couple, who had been separated since 1992, are parents of Robert 3rd, 9, and Kathleen, 5.

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, 39, announced his engagement to Tarn mi Alexander, 30, a convention spokesmodel, on March 22. No date has been set. Crammer’s divorce from his second wife, Leigh-Anne Csuhany, 24, a former exotic dancer, became final in December. It will be the first marriage for Alexander….

Ike Turner, 62, announced on March 25 plans to wed backup singer Jeanette Bazzell, 31. It’s the third marriage for the guitarist, who was once married to singer Tina Turner, and the first for Bazzell.

Actress and TV talk I show host Ricki Lake, 25, wed artist Rob Sussman, 27, on March 26 in Las Vegas. It’s the first marriage for both.

Jimmy Johnson. 50, the Dallas Cowboys coach who led the team through five seasons and two consecutive Super Bowl victories, resigned on March 29 after a longstanding personal feud with owner Jerry Jones, 51. Johnson, who had five more years left on his $1 million-a-year contract, has reportedly been given a bonus and the right to work elsewhere by Jones, his onetime University of Arkansas football teammate. Barry Switzer, a former University of Oklahoma coach, has been named as Johnson’s replacement.

Evening Shade star Burt Reynolds, 58, was rushed to an L.A. hospital on March 30 after complaining of nausea and dizziness during a taping of his TV show. The actor was kept overnight for observation….

Elizabeth Taylor, 62, is recovering in an L.A. hospital after undergoing four hours of hip-replacement surgery on March 23. The Oscar-winning actress, who suffers from osteoarthritis in her left hip, will require a walker or crutches for an eight-week period, but is expected to make a complete recovery within a year.
