Stan Getz, 64, the graceful tenor saxophonist best known for his seemingly effortless “cool jazz,” died of liver cancer on June 6 in Malibu. Getz first gained fame in the 1940s and topped the pop charts in 1962 with the bossa nova hit “Desafinado.” “When the end comes,” said Getz, who waged a lifelong struggle with drugs and alcohol, “the thing that I will be most proud of is that, toward the end of my life, I became what I always should have been, a decent gentleman. Or as much of one as I can be, coming from the Bronx.”…

Money expert Sylvia Porter, 77, whose personal finance column ran in more than 400 newspapers, died of emphysema on June 5 in Pound Ridge, N.Y….

Larry Kert, 60, who played star-crossed Tony in the original 1957 Broadway production of West Side Story, died of AIDS on June 5 in New York City….

Actress-producer Eva Le Gallienne, 92, one of the last remaining grande dames of American theater, died of heart failure on June 3 in Weston, Conn. She received an Oscar nomination in 1981 for her last film appearance, in Resurrection….

Claudio Arrau, 88, the Chilean-born pianist whose genteel, worshipful renderings of Beethoven and Liszt entranced audiences for 70 years. died after intestinal surgery on June 8 in Mürzzuschlag, Austria.

Mormons believe in big families and, apparently, big weddings. So it was only fitting that when Jimmy Osmond, 28, the youngest of the singing Osmonds, wed college student Michelle Larson, 24, some 1,000 “close” friends came to their wedding reception in Salt Lake City on June 7. “As the last of the tribe, I’ve been getting a lot of ribbing,” says Jimmy, now a record producer….

Actor Tommy Lee (Lonesome Dove) Jones, 44, and his wife, photographer Kimberlea, 33, who live in San Antonio, are expecting their second child in September. They already have a son, Austin, 8. The Texas-born Jones says the new baby will not be named Dallas or Waxahachie, adding, “My son wasn’t named after a city in Texas. The city and the boy were named after the same man [Stephen Austin, founder of Texas’s first colony].”

Judy Nelson, 45, until recently the companion of tennis champ Martina Navratilova, 34, has petitioned a Texas court for half of Martina’s earnings during the seven years that the two lived together, per their 1984 cohabitation agreement. Martina is reportedly keeping company now with Cindy Nelson, 35, a former Olympic skier.
