A few days before, they were shooting scenes in the south of France. But Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt rarely settle on one continent for long.

On Oct. 5 they packed up the three kids and headed to Pune, India; they’ll spend the next month in the country shooting A Mighty Heart, a drama starring Jolie as Mariane Pearl, widow of the slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. (The movie, which Pitt is producing, is based on Mariane’s memoir.)

“We are excited to have this chance for our children to learn about India’s wonderful culture,” Jolie tells PEOPLE. Mom and Dad are learning too: Jolie, 31, and Pitt, 42, toured the area in an auto rickshaw Oct. 6. But when they took a similar trip with Maddox, a paparazzi frenzy soon forced them to turn around. (Earlier, one of their bodyguards made headlines when he got in a scuffle with a photographer.) Since then, the children have stayed close to their hotel while Jolie started filming Oct. 9.

Though Pearl, who is being played by Dan Futterman, was killed by Muslim extremists in Pakistan in 2002, “this is not a film about terrorism or conflict,” says Jolie. (She and Pitt donated $100,000 to the Daniel Pearl Foundation on Oct. 10, which would have been the journalist’s 43rd birthday.) “It is a story of people of all faiths working together to find the truth.”

• Pronounce it “poona.” The city of 2.8 million is about 125 miles southeast of Mumbai in the western part of India.

• It’s known as the “Detroit of India,” home to huge automakers including Mercedes-Benz.

• It’s also a major college town: 150,000 students attend Pune’s almost 50 educational institutions.

• Foreigners flock to the Osho Commune International meditation resort, founded by Bhagwan Rajneesh in 1974, and guru B.K.S. Iyengar’s original yoga institute, where his children still teach.

On Oct. 9 Jolie stepped out as Mariane Pearl, who was pregnant when her husband was killed in ’02.
