She’s set to film a fourth season of The Simple Life, recording her first album, preparing for marriage—and seeing her first novel (yes, you read that right) hit shelves Nov. 8. Nicole Richie, 24, sat down in her L.A. apartment to reflect on issues large and small with PEOPLE’s Lisa Ingrassia.

ON HER BOOK: “Part of it is autobiographical, but it’s more exciting if you make things up.”

ON FIANCE ADAM GOLDSTEIN: “He had a talk with my dad [asking to marry me] and my dad started crying. I’m looking forward to marriage. Your name changes, which will be exciting.”

ON TYING THE KNOT: “It will definitely be within a year. I want a really big wedding.”

ON KIDS: “I want five—three girls and twin boys. I’m a good mom to my dogs, so I feel like I’ll be a responsible parent.”

ON MAKING THE SCENE: “I go out, but not as much. It’s like, why do you lose interest in playing in the sandbox? It’s because I grew up.”

ON NESTING: “Whenever I go into a house, the first thing I think is, ‘Would I want to be sick there? Would I want to be there on a rainy day?’ [I like] cozy.”

ON GETTING THIN: “I gained weight in rehab [in 2003]. It’s been slowly coming off. I’ve actually never dieted.”

ON HER BIGGER CLOTHES: “I don’t have them anymore. I don’t know what happens to my clothes—sometimes they just disappear, you know?”

ON PARIS [HILTON]: “We just grew apart. We’re not the first two people on the same TV show that don’t get along. I just don’t think it’s that serious.”

ON FOLLOWING IN DAD LIONEL RICHIE’S FOOTSTEPS: “He’s heard one song [I’ve recorded], I think. But I wasn’t with him. I don’t want to be in the room!”
