At a recent New Jersey concert, between belting out standards like “The Theme from New York, New York” and “Cabaret,” the singer, 61, confided to the crowd that she had dropped 43 lbs. How? Inspired by Kirstie Alley’s example, Minnelli tried the Jenny Craig diet, which relies on preportioned meals. So how does Alley feel about her latest dieting disciple? “I love Liza whether she is skinny, fat or in between,” Alley says. “But it sounds like she is happier with herself now, and that makes me ecstatic.”

Lily Allen has sounded off against pressure to be thin in the past—and even sells her own clothing label aimed at average-size women. But recently the English pop star, 22, has lost weight, in part by having herself hypnotized to adopt healthier habits. “She was eating lots of junk foods and wouldn’t go to the gym,” says her London-based hypnotherapist Susan Hepburn. “I got her to want to go, so she goes. My treatment isn’t a diet; that’s why it’s so effective.”
