Fresh off making history with Avatar, the Australian-born former bricklayer is back slaying monsters in another 3-D extravaganza, Clash of the Titans. Says Worthington, 33: “I want to make the kinds of movies I like to watch.” A few things he’s learned along the way:

Be careful what you say “Yes” to before presenting an Oscar.

“Someone offered me a piece of gum right before I went out, so I was chewing gum onstage. The Australian press just roasted me for it. I was so blown away, I could have been eating a ham sandwich and wouldn’t have realized it. I was in front of millions of people, standing next to Jenny from the Block [copresenter Jennifer Lopez]! I just wanted to throw my hands in the air and scream, ‘Woooo!'”

Seek out your elders.

“I am lucky because I can ask the top people in my field for advice. Russell Crowe has been really helpful. He has reminded me to slow down, relax and to try to loosen up a bit.”

Be someone worth looking up to.

“I’ve really tried to tone down the cursing. My sister told me that her 9-year-old read my quotes in the press and thinks it’s cool to talk like that. If it was someone else’s kid, it would be one thing, but this is my own nephew here.”

Invest in a killer set of wheels.

“I just got a beach cruiser. All I need is a basket and a little bell and I would be the witch from The Wizard of Oz.”
