For a focused, driven and self-professed type A personality, Jewel has found motherhood to be a wonderful lesson in living in the moment. “I like to control things,” says the singer-songwriter, 37, sinking into her living room sofa at the 2,400-acre Stephenville, Texas, ranch she shares with husband, former rodeo bull-riding champion Ty Murray, 45. “But with motherhood, you never know what to expect. You just embrace it and treasure every moment because it is fleeting.”

Jewel learned that lesson while still pregnant, when, at a one-week-post-due-date checkup, doctors discovered the baby’s heart rate was dropping and rushed the singer into an emergency C-section. But Kase Townes Murray, who was born a healthy 7 lbs. 6 oz. on July 11, seems well over his bumpy trip into the world. Says Jewel: “He’s very mellow.”

Of course, sleep is sometimes an iffy prospect. “He slept eight hours once,” insists Ty. “It probably won’t happen again,” Jewel says, chuckling. Still, both say they are content to put their careers on hold for a bit while they focus on parenthood. Jewel wrote and recorded The Merry Goes ‘Round-an album of bouncy kids’ songs available in September-while pregnant with Kase, so “he got sung to a lot,” she says. And Ty, who has retired from bull-riding, sticks close to home as well, spending his days running their working cattle ranch. “Kase is our only thing,” he says. And both he and Jewel agree that their dream is for Kase to find his own passion. “I just hope,” says Jewel, laughing, “it isn’t bull-riding.”
