Sheryl Crow may be the performer, but at home her boyfriend Lance Armstrong does most of the singing. “He knows more songs than I do!” she told us at the March 1 EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund benefit honoring the cyclist. Crow, however, doesn’t try to return the favor; she leaves the biking to Lance. “I ride in Beverly Hills,” says the singer, “then go get a Double-Double [burger] at In-N-Out.”

More than 150 of Hunter S. Thompson’s closest friends and family gathered at Aspen’s swank Hotel Jerome March 5 for a private memorial service honoring the gonzo journalist, who committed suicide at his Colorado ranch Feb. 20. Guests who spoke at the emotional, but often lighthearted, six-hour tribute included Johnny Depp, John Cusack, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn and Josh Hartnett. “Bill Murray did a stand-up comedy routine,” says one guest, adding that tables in the ballroom were decorated with Mardi Gras beads, women’s underwear and tubes of red lipstick “to capture Hunter’s spirit.” Later in the evening, guests were offered Jell-O shots spiked with gin. Explained one attendee: “The family wanted their guests to enjoy something Hunter enjoyed on a daily basis.”

Entourage‘s Kevin Connolly and NBA star Shaquille O’Neal both had plenty of company to celebrate their birthdays over the March 4 weekend. In Las Vegas, Connolly and girlfriend Nicky Hilton rang in his 31st at the nightclub Light at the Bellagio hotel and casino. After they dined with pals Leonardo DiCaprio and Lukas Haas, guests Tobey Maguire, Nicollette Sheridan, Michael Vartan, Owen Wilson and Connolly’s castmates watched him blow out the candles on a four-tiered birthday cake. Of course that little pastry dish had nothing on the $16,000, 6-ft. Shaq-shaped cake that O’Neal got to cut into at Miami’s Hotel Victor in South Beach. The Miami Heat center, who turned 33 March 6, gave away cigars rolled in 1972 (the year he was born) to guests including Donald and Melania Trump, Star Jones Reynolds, Tara Reid, Vivica A. Fox, Alonzo Mourning and several of his other teammates. The most impressive birthday present? A $100,000 platinum-and-diamond necklace with a Superman logo pendant given to Shaq by his wife, Shaunie.
