As she slipped into bed to tell her sleeping husband the good news, she whispered into his ear, “You’re going to be a daddy.” And in that magic moment, Kelly Preston, 47, woke up her husband, John Travolta, 56, with news they had both wished for. “There were a lot of tears-tears of joy,” she tells PEOPLE. “It was a moment I’ll never forget. We’re so excited.”

More tender moments await the couple as they prepare for the birth of their baby boy, due later this fall. After the loss of their beloved son Jett, who died in 2009 from a fatal seizure, the arrival of a little brother for daughter Ella Bleu, 10, has given the couple such happiness that they can barely contain their excitement. “She can’t stop talking about it,” says one close friend. “And John’s got a real sparkle in his eyes now. You can see it in his face.”

Now in the midst of her third trimester, Preston’s got a glow of her own. She rocked platform heels and a one-shouldered Notte by Marchesa gown at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Sept. 16 premiere for her upcoming movie Casino Jack, in which she plays the wife of crooked lobbyist Jack Abramoff (Kevin Spacey). When she filmed it last summer, “I hadn’t been in a movie in over a year, so it was nice to be back,” she says. “I love the relationship my character has with Jack-she stood by him.” As for her pregnancy, “I feel terrific,” says Preston, whose biggest craving has been fresh fruit. “Mangoes, lychees, peaches, cherries-you name it!”

Meanwhile the couple have been in full nesting mode, planning the decor of the nursery in their home. “I’ve been cleaning out everything in the house,” she says. “Ella has been helping too. She’s looking forward to being a big sister.” Travolta (who couldn’t attend the premiere because of business in L.A.) “has been singing to the baby. He talks [to him] and will rub my belly. Ella too.” He also pampers her with back rubs and trips to the spa-“so many wonderful husbandly things,” she says.

Preston won’t spill about baby-name discussions. “We have some names picked out,” she says. Until the little one’s arrival, she’s holding on to every precious minute-even as she heads into the not-so-comfortable home stretch of her pregnancy. “It’s gone by so quickly,” she marvels. “I almost want it to slow down, because it’s been so amazing. I think I’m going to miss it. ”
