How do you impress a mom who took home an Olympic gold medal at age 14? By rolling over from back to belly at a record-breaking 4 weeks old! “It’s pretty amazing she’s so strong already,” says Dominique Moceanu of daughter Carmen. “It takes two of us to hold her down to change her diaper!” Adds Dad, surgeon and former gymnast Mike Canales, 30: “I think she’ll be a great gymnast. But if she wants to play piano, that’s fine with me.” For now, Carmen is busy playing with her toy octopus—a gift from Mom’s friend and ’96 teammate Kerri Strug (“I’m biased,” Strug says, “but Carmen’s adorable”)—and practicing her podium smile. “We call her Gummy,” says Moceanu, 26, “because when she smiles, it’s just a mouthful of gums.” Mom, meanwhile, is back on the treadmill and has lost half of the 41 lbs. she gained while pregnant. “This pooch is hard to get rid of!” says Moceanu, who indulged in the occasional ice cream and pizza while pregnant. Looking ahead, the new mom—who studies business and coaches gymnastics—says she’d love for her daughter to follow in her footsteps: “[Coaching her] would be the ultimate dream.” But simple moments like watching Carmen sleep are already a dream come true. “We just stare at her,” she says. “We can’t believe she’s ours.”
