A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…Well, it was actually just a couple of years back, in an apartment in Canada, that an unknown named Hayden Christensen was told he had beaten out more than 400 actors for the part of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones. “He’s got a certain edge to him—the same kind that James Dean and Marlon Brando had,” says director George Lucas. The 21-year-old Christensen still needed help looking the part. “Anakin is from a desert planet, so they gave me a pretty severe tan,” says the 6’1″ actor. He was also given hair extensions to lengthen a choppy cut from an unlikely barber. “He was like ‘I need a haircut—think you could do it?’ ” says his brother Tove, 29. “He’s not one of those guys who are constantly preening.” These days, Christensen is not even bathing. Appearing last month in the London stage production of This Is Our Youth as a drug dealer with “a cleanliness problem,” he said, “I haven’t showered for two weeks. I’m making a concerted effort to smell bad, and I think I’m doing a pretty good job of it.”
