“They absolutely complement each other,” says makeup artist Carol Shaw of her friends Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who connected in Paris last September, he as a paragon of no-nonsense hip, she as a model of modern romance.

“It’s a lovely dress. It picked me,” said Sarah Jessica Parker of the silk tulle Richard Tyler gown she wore to the Golden Globes in L.A. in January, joined by her Prada-tuxed spouse, Matthew Broderick. “They are such a cute couple,” says Tyler.

At the L.A. premiere of her film Gone in 60 Seconds in June, Oscar-winning newlyweds Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton stuck together long enough to show off her new tattoo–and their shared affinity for leather pants.

Ahoy, matey! The scraggly beard that Tom Hanks grew for his role in next winter’s Cast Away might have sunk his classic tux at a March fund-raiser in L.A., but it did nothing to diminish wife Rita Wilson’s elaborately beaded skirt by Randolph Duke.

Citing her “offhanded elegance” and his “classic manliness” at the L.A. premiere of What Lies Beneath in July, designer Giorgio Armani declares Michelle Pfeiffer (wearing a silk Armani blouse atop Earl jeans) and husband David E. Kelley (in a wool crepe Armani suit) “so well-matched in looks and grace, it’s mesmerizing.”

It was easy being green for David Arquette and Friends star Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette at the L.A. premiere of their film Scream 3 in February. “They dress for what they’re feeling at the moment,” says stylist Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig. “It works with their characters in real life and onscreen.”

Shiny, happy people? That would be Julia Roberts and Benjamin Bratt at the L.A. premiere of Erin Brockovich in March. She sparkled in shimmery red pants by Alberta Ferretti; he gleamed in head-to-toe Calvin Klein. Says Ferretti rep Christina DiMauro: “They look like they were made for each other.”

While Tim McGraw remained a country boy in a black Gucci suit and Resistol hat at the Academy of Country Music Awards in L.A. last May, Faith Hill went city chic in a custom-made silk Versace, “They’re incredible bookends for each other,” says stylist Garth Condit, who often works with them. “When Tim’s in dark colors and that hat, he really stands out. And Faith is just a breath of fresh air. They’re a sexy, modern couple.”

Rohan Marley, son of the late reggae legend Bob Marley, escorted his lady in red, singer Lauryn Hill (in Vivienne Westwood faux leather and ruby Bottega Veneta shades), to a party after the MTV video awards last September. “They look stylish no matter what they wear”, says stylist Marni Senofonte.

Scottish race-car driver Dario Franchitti had no trouble keeping up with his fiancée, Ashley Judd, wearing Valentino in Monaco last May. “She’s classically elegant and loves to dress up,” says L.A. jeweler Martin Katz of his client. “He’s handsome in anything.”

At the New York City premiere of her movie X-Men in July, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos kept cool in a purple satin halter by Barbara Bui while her husband stayed cool by going tieless. “They have an easy, elegant style,” says Neil Lane, the L.A. jeweler who sold John Stamos the antique engagement ring he gave his model-turned-actress wife.

He may have starred in Hollow Man, but Kevin Bacon (in Prada) and wife Kyra Sedgwick (in Gucci) dressed for high visibility at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in L.A. last May. “He’s the one with all the fashion sense,” Sedgwick recently told IN STYLE.
