Joan: Cate Blanchett and I talked about how I’d met Katharine Hepburn once and she was really mean, and Cate said, “Maybe you have to be mean to make it big in this town.” I loved that. Melissa: Actually, her greatest moment was when she met Leo DiCaprio and said, “Who do you most want to meet tonight?” and he said, “You, Joan.” Trust me, my mom was flattered. WHO HAD THE BEST DRESS? Joan: I loved Beyoncé in that black velvet [Atelier Versace]. And Cate Blanchett with the yellow and maroon [Valentino]. That’s so hard to pull off and look gorgeous. And she did, of course. THE WORST DRESS? Melissa: This is tough, but … Natalie Portman. It was like she was channeling Winona Ryder… all waiflike. The only difference is, she probably didn’t steal her dress. Ha! Okay, I stole that line from my mom. WHO WAS THE CUTEST COUPLE? Melissa: Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe. You could tell, as she was getting her picture taken, he was thinking, “My wife is the most beautiful and talented wife ever.” They’re the kind of couple that won’t ever break up. It gives me goose bumps. THE ODDEST COUPLE? Melissa: Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya. She shows up perfectly pulled together, very chic, and he looked absolutely ridiculous in this white tux with this Shriner’s hat and these huge Lucite glasses. She had to be thinking, “What the hell? Why are you doing this to me? Have you lost your mind?” JOAN, LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR DRESS. Joan: It took six children working round the clock to sew these crystals on [my $25,000 Randy Rahm silk chiffon gown]. It kept them out of trouble. I’m kidding. I’ve never felt so beautiful.
