BRAD PITT DISHES ON …
Shooting his western The Assassination of Jesses James by the Coward Robert Ford: Funnily enough, it was close to the same location where I shot Legends of the Fall more than 10 years before. We even had a lot of the same wranglers and stunt men.
Anticipating Oscar buzz: I don’t play that. Going home: A lot of my family is still in Missouri, so when I do get home, and I do, it’s because I have to take the grandkids back or my folks would kill me.
His encounter with an overzealous fan at the Venice Film Festival: I hadn’t been jumped like that in some time. There are a couple of people out there who aren’t playing with a full deck, but I don’t want to change my life because of paranoia.
“My parents separated when I was little, and my dad primarily raised me. He wanted me to be independent and was the kind of dad who, if you fell and broke your arm, would be saying, ‘Walk it off!'”

Working with Glenn Close on the FX legal thriller Damages: Shoe Golf! We’ll be on-set, and she’s like, “Okay, closest to the light pole wins!” You flick your shoe off and see how many strokes it takes to hit the lamppost. She’s flinging these Manolo Blahniks through the air, and the costume designer is screaming, “Nooooo!”
An embarrassing moment: I had just done Friends and went to see a friend on Broadway. I have never been so recognized! At the break, this boy in a tux approaches with camera in hand, and clearly he is on a prom-like date. He says something to me, I don’t quite hear it, but obviously he wants a picture of me. So I’m like, “Of course! Absolutely!” He looks over at his girlfriend and I walk over to her. She’s really nervous, so I’m like, “It’s okay” and put my arm around her, and she stiffens visibly. The boy very hesitantly takes our picture and then goes, “Umm? Now, can you take a picture of us?”
3 Questions For …
1 SO YOU’RE HITTING BROADWAY THIS FALL IN CYRANO DE BERGERAC?
It’s my dream of all dreams! All the stuff I’ve done [in TV and movies] has been accidental. I ended up auditioning for TV while I was an understudy on Broadway, because I was so broke. I got a miniseries and had to take it. I was so ashamed.
2 WITH HUBBY BEN AFFLECK DIRECTING, WILL WE BE SEEING YOU IN HIS NEXT FILM?
I don’t think I’d ever star in a movie Ben directed; somebody has to raise the kids!
3 YOU HAVE SOME PHYSICALLY INTENSE SCENES IN THE KINGDOM. DOES BEN WORRY ABOUT YOU GETTING HURT?
He was on-set when we shot a fight scene. I thought it would’ve made him nervous to see them chucking me against the wall, harder and harder with every take. He was actually too calm. Between us, I felt like he could’ve been a bit more, “That’s my wife; be careful with her!” But he was just like “Go for it, babe. Harder!”
