Exclusive! The Destiny’s Child alum talks about her decision to go under the knife

It wasn’t years of singing “Bootylicious” next to the curvy Beyoncé that made Kelly Rowland want bigger breasts. In fact, says the size-2 former Destiny’s Child singer, “I was sick of not fitting into my tops.”

Ironically, Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, had designed the halter top that helped tip a decision Rowland says she had long been contemplating. “There was this one really hot House of Dereon top—I just wanted to fill that out!”

So last October, Rowland went to a Houston-based plastic surgeon to get breast implants. “I simply went from an A-cup to a B-cup,” she explains. “I didn’t want to have double Ds and be a little bitty size 2—that would look nuts!”

Hers was a subtle change, but when Rowland was photographed in a bikini last month, fans noticed, and rumors flew. So while promoting the March 25 digital re-release of her second solo CD, Ms. Kelly, she decided to take on the chatter about her newly filled-out figure. “I was hesitant about talking about it,” she says. “It is a decision I made for myself. I like it, and that’s all that counts. For young people: Think about it before you just jump off and do something [you may regret later].”

Rowland, 27, says she had considered getting implants “since I was 17” and part of the sexy, up-and-coming girl group. By the time Destiny’s Child hit it big, she could afford to wear anything, but “there were tops by great designers that I just wanted to fill out.”

After wavering a bit (“You get really close, maybe you have a consultation, and you’re like, ‘No, I’m not gonna do that!’ ” says Rowland), she booked an appointment and brought along two pals for support. “They took really good care of me.” For a month after the procedure, the Texas native “took it easy and did everything [the doctor] told me to,” says Rowland, including staying away from the gym, wearing a sports bra for three weeks and avoiding pushing or pulling movements. “I had to heal quick—I had things to do!”

Things that included releasing a new single, “Like This,” with Eve—and showing off her new bikini body. Packing for a trip to Miami in February, “I had a bathing suit that I loved for so long that I put to the side because I thought, ‘I’m never going to be able to wear this,'” recalls Rowland. “But when I put it on, I probably sashayed around my room the whole morning.” And that House of Dereon top? “I put it on and I looked so good!” she says with a laugh. “I’m so happy. I feel complete.”
