Before a SoulCycle class, Dobrev sends hairstylist Riawna Capri a pic of her Zuhair Murad dress to inspire the do. Capri’s response: “The back had this really cool tie. Her hair needed to be up to show that off.”
Caffeine run! Capri grabs an iced double dirty chai latte for the star (hey, it’ll be a long day!), plus javas for the rest of the team, from Alfred Coffee & Kitchen.
Stylist Ilaria Urbinati shows the dress to makeup artist Beau Nelson, who says, “I loved the tomato-red color, and I thought it’d be fun to play with that same shade on her face.”
Capri puts on her Spotify playlist, “That Time in Bali” (she and Dobrev went in July).
Julianne Hough arrives (Capri did her hair too!) toting strawberries from the farmers’ market for everyone to snack on.
Dobrev and Capri Google “high ponytails” in search of more updo inspiration.
Dobrev applies her own false lashes! “She’s awesome at it,” says Nelson. “I just supervise!”
The actress is antsy to get to the VMAs, but Nelson won’t let her leave without perfecting the lip.
The star besties head out, while Capri and Nelson go for margaritas!

All it takes is a Google Image search to see what Cate Blanchett has worn on the red carpet over the past year. But not until we sit down with her do we learn that in addition to the gowns and shoes and jewels, she adds one finishing touch: a spritz of Armani Sì. “I just felt like it was such a positive thing to say to myself before I walked out the door. Sì! Say yes.”
The star is the face of the recently released fragrance, created, according to the brand, for the woman who says yes to dreams, freedom, love and herself. Blanchett certainly fits the description. When asked about big yes moments in her life, she reveals that she accepted her now-husband’s marriage proposal after just a month of dating.
Her attitude toward choosing designer gowns is similarly decisive: “There are so many opinions. But you’ve got to wear what you want to wear, what looks right on you, what feels right in the moment.”
That’s how she ended up wearing the lace Armani Privé to the Golden Globes (below) and also how she chooses her off-duty outfits each morning.
Blanchett admits, though, she hasn’t always said yes to the right looks: “Oh God, I’ve made some doozies!” She adds that everyone goes through style “bumps and lumps” and “bad stages.”
And while Blanchett takes risks in fashion, she plays it a bit safer when it comes to beauty. “Sometimes I don’t put any makeup on,” the mother of three says. “But even when I’m rushed, I put on scent.”
The first thing Blanchett said in the interview? How much she loved deputy style director Zoë Ruderman’s sparkly slip-ons. Tory Burch “Mischa” Flat Espadrille, $150; toryburch.com
Cate’s Go-To Lipstick
“Tom Ford does a good line of reds” (like the hue below Scarlet Rouge, $50; tomford.com), says Blanchett, who prefers natural makeup save for a bold lip.

All About Giorgio Armani Sì
The scent, which hit shelves this summer, combines cassis nectar, modern chypre and light musky wood. “The way it develops is so beautiful,” Blanchett explains. Giorgio Armani Sì, $70 for 1 oz.; giorgioarmani- beauty.com
