She had left Montgomery in pursuit of no more sensuous pleasure than a nostalgic fling at Cypress Gardens, where she starred in 1961 (inset). Her comeback was sponsored by Spray, a new magazine for the water-skiing set. But back home in Alabama, the 38-year-old mother of two (by a previous marriage) had barely put away her skis when she had to slalom again—this time to avoid reporters with a document spelling the end of her six-year marriage. It was an alleged draft of Governor George’s divorce petition, charging “such a complete incompatibility of temperament that the parties can no longer live together.”
