After Ariel Winter revealed this week that she had breast reduction surgery in June to address the physical pain and body bullying she has endured, the 17-year-old star has found a caring environment in her Modern Family family.

“You know, I think the world of Ariel and just think that she’s just so grounded,” Ty Burrell, who plays Phil Dunphy on the show, told PEOPLE at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, on Friday about Winter, who portrays daughter Alex.

In fact, Burrell said all of the young actors on Modern Family keep level heads.

“We’re very lucky,” he said. “You have kind of a weird pride about all those kids as a TV parent. They’ve got their own parents and guardians, and they’re all very well taken care of, but you do have a sort of parental feel towards them.”

Burrell added, “They’re all so much more mature and composed than I am, it’s ridiculous. We’re lucky.”

Winter, who voices Sofia on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First, will make a storybook reading appearance at D23, the Disney fan convention, on Saturday morning at the Anaheim Convention Center.
