Although she met the true death in season 4, the deliciously austere Nan Flanagan appears in a 1980s flashback that had the seemingly ever-nude Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) forced by a group of hit men to choose between saving the life of his beloved progeny, Pam, over his current human paramour.
In the present day, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) uses the fact that the villainous Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp) survived the season 6 finale to motivate Eric out of his Hep-V-infected funk and on a vindictive mission of revenge that ends with the former pastor’s wife hiding in a wine cellar as her yogi (and bed partner) is murdered by the same hit men Eric met back in 1986.
And there is murder in Bon Temps as well.
While fairy-blooded Sookie (Anna Paquin) successfully recruits Bill (Stephen Moyer) to help her serve as bait to attract the pack of infected vampires who have been terrorizing their town, the mob of human townspeople prove they can be even more frightening – and just as deadly.
Mayor Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) is the first to run across the newly armed mob. After they kill his vampire companion, Sam is forced to shift into an owl to escape their oncoming bullets. Later, Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) is shot in the shoulder by Hoyt Fortenberry’s mother Maxine (Dale Raoul) and in return, Violet (Karolina Wydra) pulls out Maxine’s intestines, effectively ending the life of the opinionated blonde.
Having a decidedly more relaxing night, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and James (Nathan Parsons) spend the evening getting high. James admits he is attracted to Lafayette but the vampire’s deteriorating relationship with Jessica stops him from acting on his feelings.
Back in the wilderness, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) is confused as to why Jessica is not healing as vampires should, but they continue along with Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) to find Sookie, who is sitting in the middle of a clearing and reminiscing with Bill about their early days together while they wait for the infected vampires to find her.
Sookie is eventually found by Holly (Lauren Bowles), who is being used by the pack of infected vampires as a snack while they hunt for more humans. But along with Holly comes the infected pack. Bill attempts to intervene but is held back by silver chains and is about to be staked when the four-legged cavalry arrives in the form of Sam and Alcide (Joe Manganiello).
With the infected vampires dealt with, the group turn their attention to caring for Sookie, who is covered in infected blood. While Violet helps her wash off in a nearby brook, gunshots are heard from the clearing and Sookie returns to find Alcide shot by two members of the human mob.
Jessica offers to turn Alcide into a vampire but Sookie declines and simply holds her werewolf boyfriend as the rest look on.
Just like that, Sookie has lost yet another loved one. And this final season isn’t even half over.
