Now it’s Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green’s turn to make a tough, on-the-spot decision.
Their teams performed Monday night on The Voice, hoping to avoid “instant elimination” by their coaches. (Spoilers ahead!)
Team Cee Lo’s Jamar Rogers started the night off with a bang, performing “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi to unanimous praise from the panel. “You truly sang that like it was your life on the line,” Christina Aguilera told the singer, who shared his story of contracting HIV. “You are such a strong, such a sweet spirit,” his coach Cee Lo said. “We can’t help but all be inspired by [you].”
Katrina Parker worked with Adam on “Jar of Hearts” and thrilled the judges by coming out of her shell. “It’s like seeing you and hearing you for the first time,” Cee Lo said. “You have one of the best voices now,” Adam said. “You’ve evolved so much.”
Matthai, who’s on Adam’s team, performed “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado, though Christina didn’t think she truly connected to the song.
James Massone, from Cee Lo’s team, had a similar problem with “Just the Way You Are.”
But former Mousketeer Tony Lucca pulled off a rocking version of “… Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. “That was really smart,” Blake Shelton said of the bold song choice. His coach Adam added, “You did something different and refreshing and I’m so proud of you for having the courage to do it.”
Speaking of courage, Team Cee Lo’s Cheesa tackled Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” and earned a standing ovation from Christina. “That is a beloved song,” the coach said. “Those are huge shoes to fill and you still managed to do you own thing with it. I loved it.”
Pip may have lost a good-luck charm by not wearing his signature bow tie for his performance of “Somewhere Only We Know.” “There were a couple moments that weren’t perfect,” his coach Adam said, but “I’m proud of you.”
Finally, Juliet Simms brought the house down with a stellar performance of Aerosmith’s “Cryin’.” “You are fabulous,” Christina said. “You just go in and you never look back.”
Her coach Cee Lo added, “I’m impressed with your voice. Each and every time it’s brand new.”
After much hemming (Cee Lo even read a speech from his phone), Adam and Cee Lo revealed their decisions to send home Pip and James, respectively.
On Tuesday, the voting results will be revealed.
