If the Master’s intention on The Strain is to “devour the world and swallow the light,” his plan is off to a terrifying start!
In Sunday’s third episode, the Master’s recruits – old and new – began to show their true colors. The creature’s top lieutenant Thomas Eichorst (Richard Sammel, a pro at playing the king of creeps) kicks off the episode by, quite literally, putting on a new face. Without his prosthetics, Eichorst is a ghastly mutant who’s hell-bent on unleashing the Master s power on New York City.
Regis Air’s survivors, in the meantime, are evolving more into vampiric threats that lap up blood and scare the bejesus out of their loved ones.
Like the French girl, Ansel Barbour has adopted a pair of bloodshot eyes and a serpent-like tongue that drinks up steak blood and yearns to devour his dogs. Goth-rocker Gabriel Bolivar loses his penis to become a hideous eunuch. And Capt. Redfern leaps from his sick bed at the hospital to attack Nora Martinez and Jim Kent before Ephraim comes to the rescue, beating him to death.
Then again, maybe Kent deserved to fall prey to the dark side: It was he who allowed the Master’s coffin to make its way out of the airport and into New York City.
But Eichorst gives Kent a deal he can’t refuse – an opportunity to help his cancer-ridden wife in exchange for staying mum about the Master.
“You have two bosses now,” Eichorst says to him. “The ones you report to at the CDC, and me.”
Elsewhere, Dr. Martinez realizes that Abraham Setrakian – the pawn shop owner with the mighty sword – knows more than he lets on about the outbreak, but seems unwilling to help her and Eph for now.
“Until you are willing to do what needs to be done, you are of no use to me,” says Setrakian.
And amidst all the action, there was more bad news for Eph: his own son Zach thinks it’s best that he live with his mom and only visit his dad a few days each month. It was a sad moment for Eph, especially since it’s clear that his sweet son is only trying to do what’s best for his hero pop.
The Strain airs at 10 p.m. on FX.
