It’s Thanksgiving on The Biggest Loser and that means temptations – apple pie, turkey and gravy, ham and mashed potatoes. Each winter, the contestants are faced with what they used to eat for the holidays and the realization of how many calories they’d consume.
More importantly, the contestants learn what to appreciate and be thankful for. With Vinny, the testimony of his love for his girlfriend and her son is so moving, especially him wanting to be a positive role model for her son. As a mom, when I see the contestants working to be better role models for their kids or the kids in their lives, it’s so fulfilling because not only are they changing their lives, but they’re also helping the fight against childhood obesity.
During a healthy Thanksgiving prepared by the trainers, Bob revealed his sister’s struggle with her weight. This was really moving and you could see the impact it had on the other contestants. I’ve known Bob for several years now – he is such an amazing man. There are so many things about him I admire. So much of the time the Biggest Loser audience only sees him reaching out to the contestants. Listening to Bob describe his struggles to find a way to change his sister’s life gives you a glimpse of why I love Bob so much, and how much he cares about everyone that has been on the Ranch in the show’s 12 seasons.
Since joining the show, I’ve learned the same lessons as the contestants in realizing that Thanksgiving is about time with family and friends and that you can make healthier choices in the meal that we share.
This year, my parents, brothers and their families will all be at my house for Thanksgiving. Ben and Megan will have their six cousins to play with and we’ll make sure to all be active outside (if the L.A. weather allows us) before and after Thanksgiving dinner. I’ve already signed up at my gym for the Thanksgiving Day spin class. That’ll start my metabolism off right on Thursday.
This year I’m in charge of the pumpkin pie – my favorite. We are going to make celery root mash instead of potatoes. And, I’m trying a new technique I learned from Nate Berkus – I’m going to use these smaller dinner plates I have to serve so that people keep their portions on the conservative side. If people need to go back for seconds, that’s fine. But slowing down, eating a little less in the first round might help you feel more full and hopefully prevent people from having that overly-full feeling afterwards. I’ll let you know if it works!
