Get ready for the most intense season of So You Think You Can Dance yet.

In an exclusive first look at season 12 of the dance competition, the judges explain the reality show’s new twist, in which the dancers are separated into two categories.

“We’re looking for the top 10 stage dancers, which includes tap, ballroom, ballet, contemporary, and the top 10 street dancers – salsa, street, tango and, of course, all the hip-hop,” says show creator Nigel Lythgoe. “Then we join them together and all hell’s gonna break loose.”

New judge Jason Derulo adds, “There’s rules to both sides, and there’s rules to be broken on both sides. You have to bring your A-game every single time.”

Paula Abdul will also be joining Lythgoe and Derulo at the judges’ table.

“If you come in here and the bar’s up here, you either have to beat that or you have to be brave and kinda step outside of the norm,” Abdul says.

Indeed, the dancers each season have, without fail, pushed boundaries and forced the bar higher and higher.

“Across the years the standard of dance has risen, as well as the understanding of dance by the audience,” Lythgoe says.

After the auditions, which are also featured in the sneak peek, each episode will be broadcast live, which longtime host Cat Deeley says is “bonkers you just never know.”

“I’m excited for the live shows to start now. It’s anyone’s game and it’s up to them,” Abdul says. “It’s time to shine.”
