“Sneak peek from the #Heathers set….. jealous much?” Doherty captioned the photo, which shows her sporting the same red scrunchie her character wears in the original film.
The black comedy, about a teen (Winona Ryder) who teams up with a sociopath (Christian Slater) to kill the cool-girl clique in school, is being reimagined for the small screen as a modernized, anthology series that will present each new season with a new heroine attempting to deal with her own set of Heathers.
Though information about Doherty’s new character is currently under wraps (TV Land confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she will play a “pivotal, unnamed character”), the role is a big step back into the spotlight for the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star, who has been battling breast cancer since 2015.
“I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you,” Doherty told Chelsea Handler last month. “It remakes you so many different times. The person I thought I was supposed to be or was going to be or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different.”
Production is currently underway, with Leslye Headland set to direct the Grace Cox and James Scully-starring pilot.
