“It just sucks,” McCartan, 23, said on the podcast. “That’s kind of the bottom line. I have the most amazing family and friends, truly lifesavers in my life that are being really good to me.”
The Disney Channel Liv and Maddie costars dated for three years before McCartan popped the question in April.
Less than six months after they had announced their engagement, McCartan took to Twitter to break the news that he and Cameron, 20, had gone their separate ways.
“Dove has decided this relationship isn’t what she wants. We still love each other very much. Please be sensitive, as this is painful,” he tweeted.
McCartan, who says he just “just trying to distract” himself, admits that it hasn’t been easy.
“It just plain out sucks,” he says. “It’s really hard. I still love her very much, but c’est la f—ing vie. That’s just kind of how it goes. Time heals everything.”
As for why McCartan feel the urge to propose at such a young age?
“I just always wanted to get married young,” he explains. “I would play house when I was 6years old with [my neighbor] — literally very, very young. I took it very seriously. Sometimes she would be the Mommy and I would be the Daddy, but sometimes I would be the Mommy and she would be the Daddy because it was really important that we both understood both sides of the roles.”
Though the pair are no longer together, McCartan admitted that he and Cameron are on speaking terms, saying that they were texting earlier in the day.
“I have no regrets,” he says of their relationship. “It’s not like I would take it back. I really thought that that was going to work out and we were going to be together forever.”
