With Michelle Obama traveling to China with her daughters, President Barack Obama is fending for himself in the White House.

Fortunately, the commander-in-chief has a concerned friend eager to check up on him: Ellen DeGeneres, who quizzed the POTUS on his well-being at the First Lady’s behest.

“Mr. President, Michelle said she’s out of town, and she wanted to know, did you make your bed this morning?” DeGeneres asked via satellite on Thursday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“That would be no,” Obama answered. “And when she’s out of town, things tend to get a little slovenly around the house. Socks everywhere. Shoes.”

The interview is the latest in a series of TV appearances for the first couple, who are aiming to connect with young Americans to promote the Affordable Care Act and the Let’s Move! program. The President recently – and hilariously – traded barbs with Zach Galifianakis on Between to Ferns, and Mrs. Obama will appear on the season finale of Parks and Recreation in April.

Though his goal was to remind viewers to sign up for Obamacare by the March 31 deadline, Obama did have time to chat about a slew other things.

On the topic list? Sasha and Malia growing up (“Increasingly they don’t have that much time for me. I’m not that interesting”), DeGeneres’s Oscars selfie that broke his Twitter record (“I thought it was a pretty cheap stunt myself, getting a bunch of celebrities in the background”), and, of course, soapy political dramas. Turns out, the President prefers House of Cards, while the First Lady is all about Scandal.

“I have to tell you, life in Washington is a little more boring than displayed on the screen,” he said. “You know, the truth of the matter is, if you followed me, most of my day is sitting in a room listening to a bunch of folks in gray suits talking about a whole bunch of stuff that wouldn’t make very good television.”

“Oh, well, that’s what I do, and we make great television,” DeGeneres countered.

“I have to tell you though, Ellen, there’s not much dancing in the situation room,” he responded. “As a general rule.”

Not to be outwitted, DeGeneres pointed out the First Lady’s exercise initiative, which got Obama and Vice President Joe Biden jogging around the West Wing.

“What about the Let’s Move! campaign?” she asked. “Make people dance in there.”
