The 40th anniversary of the People’s Choice Awards was a tasty appetizer to the entrée of awards shows yet to come this season, with new hosts Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs playing off of their respectively dry and goofy waitress characters from 2 Broke Girls and award winners keeping the mood light with comical acceptance speeches.
Here are five of the top moments of the night.
1. The Parade of Broke Girls.
After Heidi Klum mistakes Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs for their 2 Broke Girls counterparts and orders a burger and fries during the broadcast, the show’s hosts wonder how they’re going to manage to entertain the audience and wait on them. The solution? A flood of waitresses in the fiery orange-and-yellow uniforms carrying burgers and fries for all.
2. Sandra Bullock and Sean Hayes: hubby and wife? Bring it on.
Hayes announced the winner for favorite movie actress as “my wife Sandra Bullock,” and the actress picked up right on cue, saying, “I’d like to thank my husband Sean, for being there for me night and day, night and day.” And let’s not even mention another couple that joked about how awkward it is to pretend to be together on a regular basis: Exes Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder.
3. Justin Timberlake doles out some marriage advice.
During his acceptance speech for favorite album, Timberlake said, “I’d like to thank my beautiful wife [Jessica Biel] for teaching me patience and the little things like just putting the dishes in the dishwasher – it goes a long way. Fellas, you’re welcome.”
4. Ellen DeGeneres wins her 14th People’s Choice Award.
To celebrate her 14th win, DeGeneres treated viewers to a joke about another celebrated talk-show host. “As a matter of fact, yesterday I was talking to this lovely African-American woman, and she told me she was single and she works 80 hours a week to get by, and she looks forward to coming home every single night and watching me,” DeGeneres said. “And that woman’s name is Oprah Winfrey.”
5. Beth Behrs Performs “Baby Got Back.”
After performing Miley Cyrus‘s “Wrecking Ball,” Behrs took it up a notch and dove into the Sir Mix-A-Lot song with gusto. Gal’s got some pipes!
