When OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, premiered on Jan. 1, Oprah Winfrey and her best friend Gayle King shared the joy during an excited phone call.

“After we were on the air, [Gayle] said, ‘Oh, my God. OWN has commercials,’ ” Winfrey, 56, told reporters at Thursday’s Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena. “She goes, ‘It’s not like I didn’t think you were going to have commercials, but you have commercials just like a real network.’ And I said, ‘I’m thinking the same thing! I didn’t know I love Febreze so much!’ ”

As OWN enters its first full week on the air, Winfrey says she knows that her programming, which she says is “about your best life,” won’t necessarily have universal appeal.

“You’re not going to get everybody. But at this point in my life, I’m not trying to get everybody. I’m really not,” she said. “I’m really only trying to get the people who want to hear it and who want to see it. And if you don’t, then I’m not talking to you, and that’s okay, because there’s a lot of people in the world.”

And if there are shows on OWN that don’t catch on right away, that’s okay, too, Winfrey says. While she hopes to build a “channel with programming that is meaningful to our viewers,” she also admits, “there are a few shows that even if they don’t respond, I’m keeping on anyway, because I can!”

There are other perks of having your own network, but Winfrey isn’t focused on the obvious.

“I am loving that I understand who I really am, and I am not enamored or dazzled by this whole idea of fame,” she said. “It’s fun and it’s certainly better to have money than to not, having made every single salary. And so I don’t deny that … It’s nice to be able to get what you want to get and all that stuff. But who I really am is a woman on purpose trying to live on purpose, through the purpose and to fulfill that.”
