No sex? No problem!
Tina Sugandh and Tarz Ludwigsen, the married stars of Bravo’s new series Newlyweds: The First Year, say they are more like “brother and sister” than husband and wife.
“People are going to laugh at me for saying this and think I’m absurd, but I really feel like for us, sex is really just a bonus,” Sugandh, an Indian pop star, tells PEOPLE. “We’re really best friends. We’re very fulfilled with our chemistry.”
The singer – whose first year of marriage was filmed for the series, which premieres Monday – says the romance has faded since she and Ludwigsen tied the knot.
“I used to have so much lust for Tarz. And now I just look at him like this goofball dork,” she says. “Looks wear off. You just wake up going, ‘Oh, there’s my dorky husband.’ America’s so fixated on ‘How many times are you doing it? Oh, my God, only once?’ To each his own. I’m not judging.”
The couple’s busy schedules are apparently partly to blame for the lack of sex. “A lot of it had to do with the fact that I was working,” Tarz explains. “I have a start-up company and I did lots of traveling. I was working 20 hours a day for months and months and months.”
And while Tina is content with no sex, she does worry about becoming a mom one day.
“I don’t blame him, but at the same time, it’s incredibly frustrating because I’m not 20 and I have maybe a half of an egg left,” she said. “So that was a huge struggle [that will play out on the show].”
Has their sex life improved since filming ended last year? “I’d say no,” Tarz says. “It’s nonexistent.”
Tina, on the other hand, is a bit more hopeful.
“Their company just got funded, so I think now’s the time where he might have a little bit more boinky-boink time,” she says.
Lovemaking woes aside, the pair battled other obstacles in front of the cameras.
“It was kind of a s–y year,” Tina explained. “We had a year with tragedy and drama and stuff happened that just sucked. You’ll see me lose my mind because of it. We hope that people can relate and not feel alone.”
Newlyweds: The First Year, which follows four couples through their first 12 months of marriage, premieres Monday (10 p.m. ET) on Bravo.
