Not only did The Real Housewives of Miami star Lea Black originally not want to participate in Bravo’s new show, she refused to tell people about it even after she was cast.
“I denied it up until Bravo said that they had announced it,” the blonde Texas native told reporters during a conference call Wednesday. “I’m going to know a lot of people mad at me [because] I denied doing it. I was kind of keeping it at bay. I don’t know why; I guess I was shy about it.”
Black – who has a son, 9, with her defense attorney husband, Roy – had a hand in casting the show, which debuts Feb. 22 (10 p.m. ET), even though she didn’t consider herself as a good fit.
“I didn’t think it was something really I could do or have the time to do because I’m so busy already,” Black said. “I started recommending a lot of my friends, so [Bravo] asked if they could interview all my friends here at my house. So I set up my house, and we interviewed at least a half-dozen of my friends for the show.”
Although she was adamant about not wanting to be on Real Housewives, Black gave in at the last minute.
“At the end,” says Black, “[producers] said, ‘Will you at least do an interview?’ … I said ‘sure,’ and I guess it just started from there.”
Now that the show is about to air, Black has just one major concern about changing her mind and going in front of the cameras.
“I’m worried about the fact that I just threw myself together,” says Black, who still hasn’t seen the show’s first episode. “I didn’t do my hair or my makeup, and I just grabbed clothes out of my closet … I didn’t have time to catch my breath and organize my life. So I’m sure visually I’ll be very upset with myself.”
