Larry King and his wife were struggling in their marriage for some time before news surfaced of her alleged infidelity, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“Things have not been great with Larry and Shawn for a long time,” the source reveals of growing distance between the TV legend, 82, and his seventh wife, 56.
“They’ve been extremely unhappy for years,” adds the source. “They’ve been living in separate bedrooms for a while.”
On Thursday, PEOPLE confirmed that Shawn has been in a yearlong affair with British public speaker Richard Greene (who was first named by the New York Post‘s Page Six after the National Enquirer reported the alleged romance). And another insider told PEOPLE that Shawn had allegedly told Greene that her marriage to Larry was over.
“Larry is completely embarrassed and anguished by all of this,” a third source close to the situation told PEOPLE. “He doesn’t know what to do.”

“They didn’t split up because of the kids,” the first source tells PEOPLE, noting Larry’s devotion to his children. The source adds that, in 2010, “the kids were too young.”
Reps for Shawn have not responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment, and Larry is not commenting on the situation at this time.
