Kim Kardashian and her professional partner Mark Ballas, a Dancing with the Stars champion, bid farewell to the ballroom Tuesday, after getting eliminated from the show on the five-year anniversary of Kim’s father’s death.
“I just know he’s really happy and watching over me and I made him proud,” Kim, who earned 17 out of 30 points for her rumba with Mark, told hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, before taking the stage for a final dance.
But Mark’s father Corky was on hand to say goodbye to his son. Corky and his zany partner, actress Cloris Leachman, who scored the lowest of all the teams with 15 points, were the last pair to be sent to safety backstage, and will return to compete next week.
At the top of the show, judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba unanimously chose Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson — who earned 24 points Monday — to perform their leather-clad, Matrix-inspired paso doble, hailing its drama, artistry and entertainment value. Also to fill the hour, special guest Jessica Simpson — in an asymmetrical cinched dress — hopped on board to perform her hit single, “Come on Over,” and later covered Robbie Williams‘s “Angels.”
Siblings Derek and Julianne Hough were declared safe at the same time. Julianne said she was surprised by how quickly partner Cody Lindley picked up the complicated dances. “Being 18 and having to do that sexy little rumba, I was really impressed with him,” she said. “But he’s an actor, so he should be able to pick it up.”
And despite being told by judges that she was “born to dance,” Derek says it wasn’t a walk in the park to teach partner Brooke Burke the paso doble — even though the pair scored 24 points to tie for first place with Warren and Kym.
The hosts also gave us a glimpse behind the curtain into the Red Room, where the dancers and their stars hang out during the live show. There, it was revealed that Maurice Greene has been dubbed “Mr. Congeniality,” and that Rocco DiSpirito — who marveled over all of the “girls fixing parts, readjusting things” — can’t keep his hands off his cell phone!
“It’s one place where the true colors are showing,” Brooke said. “You see the real side of .” — Chris Willard
