“She spends a lot of time singing to it and talking to it to say we’re just playing pretend and everything’s going to be okay, so don’t worry about it,” Joe Morton, who plays Washington’s father on the hit ABC series, told PEOPLE at the 2014 BET Honors (which airs Feb. 24 at 9 p.m. EST on BET) in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
“She’s very excited about being a mom,” he added. “She’s sort of floating around having just been married and now having a baby and putting a family together. She’s in pig heaven, as they say.”
Morton, 66, says that Washington’s nurturing personality will make her a great mom. “She’s a very smart woman, very kind, very affectionate and she wants this baby – which is the key to it all,” he says.
He adds that Washington, who is exceptionally private about her personal life, enlisted the help of her castmates to keep her pregnancy under wraps until she was ready to reveal the big news.
“We’re loyal to her and that’s what she wanted – she wanted to keep it private – and we thought, ‘Well, it’s her baby, let’s help her do that.’ ”
“Be loving and affectionate and just take care of my daughter,” he says with a laugh.
