Was Kanye West‘s presidential announcement sincere? The Democratic Party seems to thinks so.

A day after the rapper shocked fans by revealing he’s decided to run for president next cycle during his epic Video Music Awards speech, the Democrats’ official Twitter account supported him.

“Last night @kanyewest declared his candidacy for president in 2020. Welcome to the race, Mr. West. Glad to have you,” the party tweeted Monday morning.

Meanwhile, an MTV source tells PEOPLE that that West’s declaration wasn’t a planned gag.

“Kanye’s speech was a complete mystery until he was giving it,” the insider says. “No one had any idea what he was going to say or do.”

West, 38, has been silent since his speech, but his famous sisters-in-law are already drumming up support on social media with a grassroots campaign of memes. Plus, Kim Kardashian West would make one stylish first lady.
