The cast of Glee said a final goodbye to Cory Monteith, who died in July, through his character, Finn Hudson, in a tribute episode they filmed recently that costar Jane Lynch says is “really beautiful.”
“It was hard, and it was beautifully written,” Lynch, 53, told PEOPLE at the FOX Fall Eco-Casino party Monday. “We grieved together, and it was so important for the crew to grieve as well, so we kind of all grieved as a big family.”
“It was really hard to do, but it was a really beautiful episode.”
In the episode, expected to air Oct. 10, it is revealed that Monteith’s character has died. “At one point, we were going to have his character die after an accidental drug overdose,” show runner Ryan Murphy told Deadline.com in August.
“But we have decided that we’re not going to have him pass from that. Basically, what we’re doing in the episode is we are not telling you yet, or maybe not at all, how that character died.”
The Glee cast is currently on a two-week hiatus from filming as the writers restructure the rest of the season to take Monteith’s death into consideration. The new season premieres Sept. 26 on Fox.
Monteith, who had battled drug addiction throughout his life, was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13. He was 31. He died from a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol.
